Jan Adriaanse


Professorship ‘Turnaround Management’ at Leiden University, The Netherlands
Jan Adriaanse is professor of turnaround management at the Leiden Law School of Leiden University. He is engaged in research projects in the interdisciplinary field of financial distress, turnaround management and insolvency law. He is an author on these subjects and a regular speaker at international conferences. In December 2005 he defended his doctoral thesis called ‘Restructuring in the Shadow of the Law. Informal Reorganization in the Netherlands’. He participated in an Entrepreneurship Education Colloquium at Harvard Business School in 2007.

Memberships and activities
He is a fellow of INSOLAD, the Dutch professional body of insolvency professionals, and a member of INSOL Europe. He is board member of the International Turnaround Management Association (Dutch chapter). In the annual Global Insolvency Practice Course of INSOL International he arranges the so-called ‘Workout Clinic’. Jan has hosted trainings and turnaround work-out simulation games for among others INSOL International and the World Bank at the Annual African Roundtable of INSOL International in Zambia and Uganda, as well as in Johannesburg, South-Africa.

Jan Adriaanse is co-founder of BFI Global. A financial advisory and investigation firm specializing in data-driven bankruptcy investigations and dispute valuations.

Jan was engaged as one of the leaders in three international business rescue and insolvency-related research projects:

  • Judicial cooperation between bankruptcy courts in the EU – project financed by EU and The International Insolvency Institute (2013-2014).
  • INSOL Europe Research Project: European Best Practice Principles for Insolvency Office Holders – financed by INSOL Europe (2012-2014)
  • European Law Institute (ELI) Project on Rescue of Business in Insolvency Law: “Drafting an EU-Wide Instrument for Harmonised Rules for Rescue of Businesses” – financed by ELI and Leiden University – in cooperation with the Universities of Regensburg (Germany) and Oxford (United Kingdom) (2013-2016).
